Invention Homework: from Mike Lohre

Students,

You may immediately have a good idea for Essay Two after reading the prompt, but it's important to carefully think through our choices, as you have literally dozens of stories that COULD work for this assignment. Which is the best?  That's why we brainstorm and use invention.

Think about the nature of the assignment and the prompt's requirements.  Remember, you are writing an essay, and not your life story or full memoir, so you have to be selective.

Brainstorming Assignment:

In the Comments section of this post, brainstorm three separate and suitable ideas for this essay, and then tell us which one you are thinking about doing at this point, and why you choose it.

This is due here on the blog by Friday, March 6 at midnight.

  1. For my three ideas to write about i thought of my junior year of lacrosse when i fractured my back, volunteering at a under privileged school, and my final engineering project in high school after 5 years of taking engineering classes. Im going to write about my junior year of lacrosse when i fractured my back and the lesson i learned from that experience.

  2. 1) When my grandma died - it was the first death I had ever experienced and it made me look at life differently.
    2) When my dog had puppies - I was only 8 and I had a new understanding of the circle of life.
    3) When I got my first job - I had to learn the meaning of responsibility and hard-work.
I think I'm going to write mine on the time my dog gave birth to puppies. This is one of my favorite memories from when I was a child and I remember it vividly.

  3. 1. When my older sister moved out.
    2. The first time I saw my mom cry.
    3. My recent trip to Egypt.
While brainstorming what stories I wanted to write about these were the three topics that came to mind. I am thinking of writing about my recent trip to Egypt because it allowed me to see just how much things can change in a short period of time.

  5. 1. Days working in the barn
    2. First job
    3. Experience after I broke both my arms playing football
After looking at the three experiences I could relate and create good dialog with option one. I am in my barn a lot. I have learned many things there.

  10. My three choices for topics to write about are:
    1. My summer job last year
    2. Playing football
    3. My final year of robotics
Robotics undoubtedly provided me the direction of engineering to pursue as a career path. I could write a lot about all three times in my life, however, I think the most meaningful experience was playing football for the Columbus Crusaders. I am going to be writing about my time playing football, the challenges I faced, the lessons I learned and how those experiences have affected my life since.

  11. My three ideas are writing about my family's three week vacation out west, getting my first show cows, my first time pulling a calf. I think I am going to write about my first time pulling a calf because I learned and realized a lot from that experience.

    1. my grandfather passing, I grew the most as a person because of that
    2. moving out of my mom's house early, i had to grow up quick
    3. my parents divorce
I want to write about my grandfather's passing, i am still learning from that today even though it happened years ago

  13. I would write about my knee surgery freshman year, the death of my aunt my 8th grade year, and my work experience my freshman year of college. I want to write about my knee injury my freshman year because it truly changed my perspective on life and I grew up a lot during my process of recovery.
