Comments for Noah and Abigail: Johnny Ramone

For your comments on Presentations, consider two things:

1) Write about something well done.  What did you learn from this group?  What part of the Presentation seemed the best?

2) Offer a constructive criticism that would help this group.  What might have been more clear?  What part of the Presentation seemed the least polished?

Exploration 9 Abigail

Part One: I learned a lot from chapter 7. I learned many different ways to write and understand profiles. One main thing I learned was the different lengths and techniques to write them. On 221 it shows how to write a profile with a picture and limited words. On pages 216-219 it is a lengthy profile. They both are able to get the same point across in different ways.

Part Two: I chose to look into the profile of Will Ferrell, one of my favorite actors. His profile talks about his young life and how his comedic career began for him after one of his SNL skits. He then moved back home and landed a spot with The Groundlings, and improve troupe. His first big film was in Austin Powers, then Old School. SNL was desperate to have him on their show and his fame exploded. It impacts us by showing how he started as a normal person like the rest of us and just within a short period of time he was a famous comedian.

Noah's Exploration 9

Part 1:
Before reading Chapter 7 in The Call to Write, I knew very little about profiles. One big thing that I learned was that profiles do not only need to be about people. For example, page 226 shows that profiles can be about places such as Cancer Alley. It seems that, as long as something has character, you can make a profile for it. I also found it interesting that, while the profiles written about people (such as the muralist on page 216) are, indeed, about that person, they are also about the times that they inhabited. To me, reading profiles is a bit like watching the film Forrest Gump in that the main narrative is about a character, but the big picture is a period piece. For example, the profile on Mike Alewitz uses the man as the main narrative focus, but the Vietnam era in which he lived was almost like a character itself.
Part 2:

The profile that I chose to do was from Time.com’s list of 100 Most Influential People. I chose the profile of comedian and actor Kevin Hart, written by comedian and actor Chris Rock. Rock explains that Hart is the number one comedian in the business today due to his vulnerability and relatability. The way that Chris Rock gushes about the kindness and happiness that working with Kevin Hart has brought him is impactful by showing that being a nice person and working hard will get you where you want to go in life.

Exploration 9

Part One: One thing I observed while reading chapter 7 in The Call to Write is that profiles vary in all lengths.  The profile on page 227 called "Cancer Valley" was rather long, but then the profiles on page 221 were simply larger photos with small captions.  This interested me because it shows the difference in creativity while still giving a reader information about specific people or places.  When reading about profiles, I connected them with biographies, but they seem to be more specific and in some cases shorter than your typical biography.  I definitely think photos really add to the quality of profiles because then it ties informational aspects you read, with face/ place.

Part Two:  I decided to look more into a profile of Bruce Jenner because he seems to be found in the media a lot lately.  this topic interests me because most of society was completely thrown off by his decision with his gender transition and also his influence on The Kardashians.  This family is a very well known family across the country, so it seems like a big deal when this news first came up.  The source I used is a profile which interested me with all different aspects of Bruce's life up until now.  What is well done about this profile is that it is organized clearly throughout.  This profile starts out with describing Bruce's early life and Olympic achievements, his role on reality TV and then ends with what has been circling the news lately: his gender transition.  I also liked this profile because it wasn't too long to read, but still gave you enough information so you would know what you were talking about if the subject came up with another person.

Exploration 9: Tia

After reading Chapter 7 in The Call to Write I learned a lot about profiles. Mainly I learned the importance of photos in a profile and how it can set the mood for the whole essay. Photos can work together to help convey the intended message to readers. Also it is important to put captions with your photos to give the reader a quick idea of what is going on in the picture or essay. I believe the most effective example in this chapter was "Cancer Alley" because the author chose a photo of an abandoned trailer home surrounded by pollution to draw readers in. I believe the picture set the mood for the essay and made me want to read more about it.

I chose the profile "Joseph Sledge, wrongly imprisoned for decades, now free" by CNN. Joseph Sledge a now 70 year old man was incarcerated for 37 years in North Carolina was recently found innocent after DNA evidence excluded him as a suspect. This profile impacted me because it made me think about how many people have been and are serving time after being wrongly convicted of a crime. Joseph Sledge spent more than half his life behind bars and when he was freed he still showed compassion for the victims families of the two women he was previously convicted of murdering.

Part One:
I was really surprised how much of a difference having pictures in your writing can make. As I was reading the profiles in chapter 7, I realized being able to match a face and place to story/situation made it much easier to imagine. Another thing that I saw that really struck me was the Phonak Ad on page 221. It shows a man all beat up: which really gets your attention, then goes on to sell hearing aides! It surely got my attention, so it worked- stuff like this really makes a huge impact and difference in how things/products/people are perceived.

Part 2:

I found a great profile on my favorite athlete: Lauren Fisher. This profile is very interesting and well done because it explains what all she has done and whats she plans to do with her competitive career. She is a very driven and determined person that has found what she loves. As an athlete she's unstoppable and only getting better, as a person she is extremely humble and has the best work ethic in the world.
