Exploration 5 Abigail

Chapter 11 helped me a lot in writing and revising my review. What i found most helpful, especially since I struggled with my review, I felt like I was writing an ad rather than a review, was on page 366 in the Considering the Relation Between Description and Evaluation. "It is important to see description and evaluation not as separate writing strategies that require separate space in a review but as strategies that are related to each other." The review I found most helpful was Slum Visits: Tourism or Voyeurism? Eric Weiner did a good job at explaining in detail and allowing the reader to form their own opinion rather than trying to persuade them one way or another, intentionally.

I wrote a review about a small town in Colorado called Manitou Springs. Like I said earlier, I have had some trouble with writing a review because I feel as if i am writing an ad for people to come to the town, persuading them one way rather than letting them form an opinion of their own. This review helped me because it explained the culture of the town, history, location, and other things located in the town like boutiques and art galleries.

  1. I think what Eric Weiner did was really helpful in writing a review. I feel like a review isn't supposed to make the reader think a certain way of the item being reviewed but instead should allow the reader to decide. A review should only give the writers opinion it isn't supposed to be like persuasive paper or ad. The review for Manitou Springs might be less like an ad if you follow what Weiner did.
