Exploration 5: Salma

In chapter 11 what I found to be the most helpful is how The Call to Write explains how to go about writing a review. For someone who has never written a review the book did a great job of pointing out the steps that need to be taken one by one and the importance of each step. I believe that the writing was used best in the review: Slum Visits - Tourism or Voyeurism. Throughout the review the author combines different perspectives and elements to allow the reader to come to their own conclusion about slum tourism instead of just stating his opinion. He also does a good job of using many different ideas and views so  the reader gets a 360 unbiased description of how slum tourism is viewed by many different people. "it combines elements of the news report, including quotes from tourism experts at universities, with elements of the review, including quotes from tourists about their experiences."

"Chris Kyle, the Navy SEAL who the Oscar-nominated box office sensation "American Sniper" is based on, wrote a book by the same name that encapsulates his hatred, bigotry and enthusiasm for killing Iraqi "savages". But Kyle's unrepentant bloodlust is missing from the movie, which valorizes him as an anguished hero"
I am reviewing the movie: American Sniper. I began this review with the idea that Chris Kyle was one hell of a hero, someone we should all look up too but throughout my research I learned a lot more about him and the story that was told. Above is one of the many reviews that caught me of guard. Although the movie was supposed to tell the story of Chris Kyle through his memoir, the movie did a good job of leaving out a lot of important detail, and strayed away from many statements that Kyle had written throughout his book.

  1. It's cool to see that you are reviewing a piece of media that is based off of a true story. I feel like you could find so many quality reviews of this story and more specifically the movie since it is somewhat new to theaters. Also, in the reviews and maybe even your own, there will be a lot of emotional statements since this story/movie is very moving.

  2. I also liked how we were given an unbiased viewpoint in that review. It is interesting how many different ways people can respond to a movie. It can change how you think to realize what feeling and thoughts are inspired by movies or books like this.

  3. I agree the review you used was also helpful to my writing. And i didn't realize some people were so rash with what they say, and this review was a very interesting point of view of the movie.

  4. Salma, I knew you would learn a lot writing this review, because the ways that Hollywood represents things really have to be taken with a grain of salt. Good job at expanding your own thinking and looking for different points of view to truly analyze strengths and weaknesses in your subject!
