Exploration 5 from Maverick

Chapter 11 of The Call to Write has very useful information on writing reviews. The most helpful information that I have attained from this chapter is the topic of Planning. The part that I focused the most on was considering the relation between description and evaluation. This part helped me the most because I was never sure if I was adding too much information and not evaluating and reviewing it as much as I should. From this paragraph and from the peer editing in class I realized that very few people know too much about the show that I am reviewing. In The Call to Write, it says that if the audience doesn't have much knowledge on the subject being reviewed more detail of what the show is about should be given. Chapter 11 also talks about how evaluation and description go hand in hand and without one of them the review wouldn't really be a review. A description and commentary are provided about the Slumdog Millionaire, “Jamal earns a living as a chai-wallah, who after a series of exhilarating and unnerving adventures has landed on the television game show and it is one of the most upbeat stories about living in hell imaginable”(Dargis 366) . This demonstrates the main topic about giving information first and then reviewing it.

I read a review about the television show “The Walking Dead” on the New York Post. This review does a good job at following the tip that there should be a description of the show based on how well the audience knows it and an evaluation of how good the show was. This review informs the audience what happened in the previous season to help the reader understand what had happened. The reviewer talks about each part of the premiere of season 5 and gave a small review on each part. He also gave critical reviews on the parts that he doesn't like and praised the good parts. This review was easy to read and understand because of how the reviewer organized his ideas. The information that can be taken from this review is that your audience should know what the review is about before just jumping into the evaluation part.

  1. I agree with your thoughts on the chapter. I had troubles with needed and non-needed information to add in my review as well. The chapter helped me address those issues. I have never really watched "The Walking Dead" but the review you gave was very descriptive. The review gave us important information on the previous season and what makes the upcoming fifth season better.
