Writing Exercise 4: Nina Stute

While the United States was fighting the unpopular war in Vietnam, many protests started waving over the country. Tensions spiked to an all time high when four students were gunned down and nine were injured by the Ohio National Guard at an antiwar protest at Kent State University. Protests formed while the United States had gradually increased their support for South Vietnam to help prevent the spread of communism. As protests got more and more attention, the Ohio National Guard was called to Kent State University during one of its most heated protests: all because of Nixon's decision to send troops into Cambodia and for the US waging a wage that it never officially declared.

Protesters on Main, Kent Ohio

In a span of 13 seconds somewhere between 61-67 rounds were fired. Some up into the air and ground, and some directly at the crowd. "Four students were killed by gunfire: Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer and William Schroeder. Scheuer and Schroeder weren't participating in the protest -- they were merely walking to class. Nine more people were wounded, one of whom, Dean Kahler, was paralyzed." (http://history.howstuffworks.com/history-vs-myth/kent-state2.htm) The motives behind why the guardsmen fired into the crowd to purposefully hurt people still remains unknown.
