Exploration 5: Tia

Chapter 11, "Reviews" in The Call To Write helped me most in showing me the different kind of reviews a person can write. I thought the review done by Eric Weiner on Slum Visits: Tourism or Voyeurism was done well. I really enjoyed how he captured the feel of the tourist who have gone on "slum tours" by using examples of experiences they encountered. The reviewer also had opinions of people who were for the "slum tours" and those who were not. I liked this review because it gives the reader the option to decide how they feel about "slum tours", it wasn't a negative or positive review. In the analysis of Slum Visits: Tourism or Voyeurism it says "It differs from the other reviews in this chapter because it doesn't really make an evaluation of "slum tours," giving readers, say, a first-person account of the highlights of Be a Local Tours in Rio de Janeiro, as a travel review typically would do." and I completely agree.

I am reviewing Johnny Cash's last album released titled American IV: Ain't No Grave. I found this review done by The Independent helpful because I was so consumed in the words sang by Cash that I wasn't looking at the whole picture. This review talked about the instruments that are played and what kind of feel they give to the song and I really felt that was a good idea to add to a review.

  1. I think the way that this review sums up the idea of Johnny Cash's last album is really interesting. Many artist now a days write and sing songs that they don't necessarily have any meaning to them but I think this review does a good job of making Cash's album more his own and makes the album more personable.

  2. I also agree that the examples given through chapter 11 helped with my understanding of how a review should look and also helped me with the process of writing my essay. The review link you attached was a very positive review for that album and was very specific with what pieces sounded great/ worked together well.

  3. I definitely agree with you about the review. When you first hear a song, you just like the sound of it and the beat to it, but you don't necessarily listen to the lyrics and what they are portraying, so the review was helpful to give me an understanding of the song past my knowledge and grasp of it.
