The
Watergate scandal occurred during Nixon's presidency. Nixon was elected
the 37th president in 1969. The Watergate scandal took place because
Nixon was trying to find out the plans of the other party in order to better
his chance of being reelected. The idea behind Watergate was to wiretap the
phones of the Democratic Party. The only reason that they were caught was
because the wiretaps didn’t work properly and had to be replaced. The guard
noticed that the locks were tampered with and called the cops. Nixon denied
knowledge and that his staff had nothing to do with it. Nixon tried to hide the
tapes of the recordings in order to cover up. He also lied in court which is a
huge crime. Reporters were trying to find out more about Watergate but couldn’t.
Two reporters got some help from a mysterious insider that had information on
this scandal. The tapes were eventually found and lead to a political war
between congress and Nixon. Nixon gave three speeches throughout this scandal.
The first was to inform the departure of a few people that were involved in the
scandal. The second was his speech saying he wasn’t involved. The third
included some of the tape from the wiretaps which made Nixon decide to resign. Nixon
was to be impeached when it was discovered that he was involved but decided to
step down to avoid impeachment. Later on Gerald Ford pardoned Nixon so that he wouldn’t
have to deal with the after effects of the Watergate scandal.
