Exploration 4
Music is one of man’s greatest inventions. It has the ability to make people
smile, laugh, and even cry. Artists like Bob Marley, The Who, The Clash, and
Pink Floyd no longer bless the world with their politically rich and emotionally
deep music that resonates with everyone who listens. No longer do people rush
to CBGB to listen to the Ramones’ simplistic, energy infused songs. Instead,
artists like Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber rule the music charts and the
newsstands because they take have a popular Instagram page. I don’t think that
modern artists are taking anything away from the music culture, I just think
nothing new has been added for quite some time. For example, One Direction, a
British boy band, has released four albums that all exactly the same. The
band’s fanbase primarily consists of prepubescent girls who think that Zayne is
hot. When listening to music, you use your sense of hearing, not your sense of
sight. Therefore, why is the primary argument for the quality of a band that
its members are attractive? Even more disturbing, one of the band’s most
popular singles, Live While
We’re Young encourages its
listeners to “get some, and live while we’re young.” While plenty of great
songs deal with sexual themes (Let’s Get it On, You Really Got Me, and Let Me Take You Home Tonight),
there is clearly a line crossed when you are telling a bunch of 11 year olds to
get laid.
However, the music business is not
doomed. Hidden beneath the fabrics of the posers and sell-outs lies a beautiful
world of widely unknown music. Enter the band MuteMath. MuteMath is a band of
tremendous quality and unbelievable talent. The band consists of four of the
most talented and energetic people that I have ever listened to. The band is
interesting in today’s music culture because they are never afraid to try
something new. As a progressive/alternative rock band who fly beneath the radar
of many music listeners, they have virtually unlimited freedom in what they
choose to record. From electronic to funk, no genre is too difficult for
MuteMath to conquer. Earlier I said that the most important sense, when it
comes to music, is hearing; however, the argument can be made that to
appreciate MuteMath at their fullest, one must see them perform. My favorite
one of their lyrics comes from the song Chaos. "I know you stay true when my world is false. Everything around's breaking down to chaos. I always see you when my sight is lost. Everything around is making time a chaos." I
believe that the band is singing about how, in times of turmoil, God stays
constant. Attached
to this post are links to two of their songs and a link solely dedicated to
their amazing drummer, Darren King. MuteMath has the greatest live show that I
have ever seen, and are truly deserving of being called one of the greatest
bands that not enough people listen to.
