Hello, my name is Salma Abdel-Latif. I am currently a freshman and live in Powell, Ohio. Something interesting about myself is that I am Egyptian. My entire extended family lives in Egypt and both of my parents spend months there working, and visiting family. Fortunately I get the the chance to visit my family often, and have also had the opportunity to live in Egypt for a couple years when I was younger.
Throughout the poem The Lanyard I found that two phrases really stuck out to me, the first being "Here is a breathing body and a beating heart" and the second "and I gave her a lanyard." In other terms these two phrases are bringing to light how his mother gave him the gift of life, and he repaid her with a lanyard. These two phrases stuck out to me because our mothers have given us so much and have never asked for much in return other than a handmade lanyard made at camp, with the help of a counselor. I enjoyed this poem because the author was able to get a serious message across to the audience in a humorous way.

Salma,
ReplyDeleteI really find it exciting and interesting that you have lived in Egypt. Egypt is the one place I have always dreamed of visiting. I would love to hear more about your experiences in Egypt. Really cool!
Salma,
ReplyDeleteI think its awesome that you have gone to Egypt multiple times, because i have always wanted to travel there. And i totally agree with the two phrases you picked from the lanyard, i always enjoyed how he turned a humorous tone into a deeper message.
Hi Salma, it's very interesting to hear how you have gotten to visit out of the country. I have never gotten the opportunity to do that, so I am very jealous. I agree with finding the poem humorous. In the beginning, I was confused with the context of the poem, but after hearing it read aloud by the author, the sarcasm was portrayed.
