Exploration Two from Noah Nicolette

Hello! My name is Noah Nicolette. I am one of six children, a huge lover of music and movies, and I am a Junior at Veritas Academy. Veritas is an extremely small private school that meets only three days a week at a church in Worthington. When we don't meet, my teachers load me up with homework on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I am also a lifeguard at the Dublin City Recreation Center.

I am still unsure about my feelings toward the poem How Trust Works that was handed out in class. The overall tone of the poem was unclear to me as I felt that Patricia Traxler shifted from tongue in cheek humor regarding her experiences with her grandmother, to an unpleasant memory of a man who wronged her in the past. For example, Traxler starts off the passage by saying "Gran always said she said Honey don't ever trust a man whose eyes are close together or whose ears are flat." Later on in the passage, Traxler makes many small and specific details regarding a man. She says, "you think maybe his eyes are closer together than you thought his ears might be a little flatter you begin to worry some but o his hands his heart his lovely body you forget about the ears the eyes you laugh at your own foolishness you laugh until your eyes spring together." This second excerpt reminds me more of a Taylor Swift song than sarcastic nostalgia. Without any punctuation, I find the tone of the passage is difficult to fully grasp for someone, such as myself, who reads very little poetry in the first place.

  1. Hi Noah! I find it very cool that you attend a private school that only meets 3 days a week. That is very interesting to me and I would love to hear more about it. I also agree with you about the poem "How Trust Works". The author was very all over the place and seemed to change her point of view on things a lot. I didn't know what to believe. I also don't read very much poetry so I can relate to your confusion on what the tone of the passage is.

  2. Hi Noah, that's very interesting how your school schedule works out! I am jealous of your big family because I love being around my family all the time. However, both of my sisters are moved out, so I am the only one left living with my parents for now. My sister sometimes works at the front desk at the Dublin Rec Center, so I wonder if you have ever ran into her there. For the first poem, I definitely agree with being confused. I thought it was a really serious poem until the end and even then, I was still a little confused.

  4. Hi Noah! The fact that you go to such a hard school and are so energetic is awesome! I noticed the same things you noticed about bringing up the earlier stated things in the poem. I also can identify with how you're confused on the tone of the passage: because so am I!
